2009 Mediterranean Treasure Hunt

I love exploring these countries and especially love the archeological museums. Many of them have breathtaking bead and jewelry collections. I've just returned from my annual treasure hunt for beads in exotic places. This year we explored ancient cities in Greece, Turkey and Italy.

The ones pictured here are from a wonderful museum in Tarquinia in Italy featuring Etruscan treasures.

Of course I see a lot of ordinary tourist beads and jewelry while traveling, but when I see unusual pieces - they are very hard to resist. I came across some fabulous .925 silver filigree beads in Turkey. They come from a small workshop and are unlike anything I had seen before. These beads are large and chunky and at the same time delicate in design and can be used in a necklace of big beads or as a pendant with silver tassles (some came home with me too). I only bought very few to try and I hope to get more - fingers crossed!!

In Italy I returned to a studio I discovered last year. I spent a wonderful morning with the artist choosing some incredible!!! new pieces. They've now arrived and the new fall colors are very cool!! Another great find - earring pairs - layers of color and then sculpted with a diamond saw.

A new step for Allene's Beads - finished pieces by a Greek artist who works with oxidized silver and semi-precious stones. There are just nine pieces in the collection - pins, earrings and a very unusual stick pin!!

So in anticipation of seeing you this fall and winter in Fresno, San Diego, Oakland, Los Angeles and Santa Fe - Have a great Holiday Season!!! - Be sure to stop by my booth (see Event Calendar) and as always -

All My Very Best - allene
